Happy Hours
Drinking cheaper in Airlie Beach
Life is tough, so a bloke has to have a hobby. Unless otherwise
indicated, all these happy hours are in the two blocks that comprise the
main street of Airlie Beach. A compact pub crawl is a lot easier on the
knees than a long distance pub crawl. These were all from 1999, and may
have changed slightly.
- Beaches bar and bistro
- 12 midday to 2 p.m., 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. $6 jugs every day. Wall
to wall backpackers.
- Capers Bar
- Airlie Beach Hotel,
Used to be the Bourbon Bar. 100 different bourbons, pool tables, and
more than a little rough. Alas, the entire bar was razed in July 1999,
as part of rebuilding of the hotel. Replaced by their much nicer Capers
Bar, which I think is pretty much the social center of town on Friday
night.
- Bowling Club (15 minute walk)
- 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Cheap lunch 12-2 includes drink
- Charlies Sports Bar
- 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Live music most nights, good food.
- Chatz Bar 'n Brassiere
- 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Lunch, dinner.
- Hogs Breath cafe and saloon
- 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Good meat meals.
- Jubilee Tavern (20 minute walk)
- 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Bistro meals, excellent wine shop for area. Poker
machines.
- Jubilee Tavern (20 minute walk)
- Have Wine tastings some Fridays.
Games area for children in the bistro area.
- KCs
- 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Live entertainment most evenings
- Magnums Bar and Grill
- New bar has Toad races, horizontal bungee, video projector. $6 jugs
every day. I'm sure they still sell drinks in the Village food court.
- Mangrove Jacks, Airlie Beach Hotel
- Good pizza, I'm told. Looks very pleasant, 30 tables, poker
machines. Giant (not cheap) wine glasses.
- Morocco's cafe bar
- Changed
- Paddy's Shenanigans
- Formerly Club Cafe, Irish beers, stout and spirits. Can be crowded.
- Pretty Mickey's
- Very comfortable location for light meal and wines, near the Post
Office in the Village.
- Stingers nightclub (upstairs)
- Opening hours 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Too noisy for me.
- Terraces Bar (Golden Orchid Drive)
- 5:30 to 6:30 happy hour, to 7 p.m. Fridays. Best views in town. My
favourite bar. Next to the swimming pool and spa at Reception. Under
New Management, very friendly, not noisy, so you can have a decent
converstaion. Up the stairs behind the Doctor's surgery (400 Shute
Harbour Road) on the main street if you are walking.
- Tricks nightclub (upstairs)
- 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. opening hours late until 5 a.m. Too noisy for me.
- Whitsunday Sailing Club (end of the Esplanade)
- Complicated happy hours. Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri 4:30 to 6,
Wed 6 to 8, Sat and Sun 11 to midday, 6 to 7. Good value meals, you
can usually get a decent fish meal.
- Whitsunday Terraces Bar (Golden Orchid Drive)
- 5:30 to 6:30 happy hour, to 7 p.m. Fridays. Best views in town. My
favourite bar. Next to the swimming pool and spa at Reception. Under
New Management, very friendly, not noisy, so you can have a decent
converstaion. Up the stairs behind the Doctor's surgery (400 Shute
Harbour Road) on the main street if you are walking.
A restaurant licence means 80% of the occupants being served alcohol
must also be having a meal. Backpackers bars have XXXX or similar beer
at around $6 a jug.
Taxis are available in the centre of town. Please don't drink and
drive. Most traffic accidents involve alcohol. Don't become a victim.
