Overlooking the beach and main street of the tourist town of Airlie Beach, entry to the Great Barrier Reef, the Whitsunday Terraces Bar provides panoramic views of boating on Whitsunday waters, resort islands in the distance, and a few of the over 70 islands of the Whitsundays.
The pool and spa are right next to the bar, which makes it far too easy to decide to sit in the spa after a swim, and relax over a plastic of champagne. I have to admit to being partial to having a champagne in the spa after my daily swim. It is tough, but someone has to set a bad example.
The bar has the most magnificent view in the area, as this scene from behind the counter shows. It is very relaxing to sit at the bar or at a table with a drink to hand and just admire the scenery.
The bar is under new management, as at 2001, and I haven't had a chance to check it out. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., with a Happy Hour from 6 p.m.
They also run the Poolside Cafe, with breakfasts from 7 a.m. and tapas, coffee and cake until around 3 p.m. The restaurant opens at 6 p.m. for more formal dining, with live music 6 to 8 on Friday and Saturday. Phone restaurant on 4946 6678.
Whitsunday Terraces Resort is on Golden Orchid Drive, Airlie Beach, 4802. Phone reception on (07) 4946 6788, fax (07) 4946 7128, or freecall reservations on 1800 075 062.
If you are walking, the shortcut from the main street is up the Terraces stairs from the car park at 400 Shute Harbour Road.
