Born in Yorkshire, England in 1947 and migrated to Australia in 1970. After a period as a songwriter, performer and part-time poet, he completed a PhD at the University of NSW. In 1987 he became a lecturer at the University of Wollongong, where he introduced courses on popular fantasy and literature of the imagination.

His theoretical books, Superstructuralism and Beyond Structuralism, have been published internationally, but fiction writing has always been his greatest love. He is the author of a comic horror novel called The Vicar of Morbing Vale, published in 1993 to cult success.

The Dark Edge is the first in a series featuring Central Inspector Eddon Brrac and Parapsych Vail ev Vessinator. In 1996, he resigned his inspectorship in order to devote his time to the writing of further Eddon and Vail adventures.
