Party report #3 for 1999 from Airlie Beach

Once the school holidays end, things get very quiet. I was also away during February, so no reports on hand.

Morocco's Airlie Beach party

Morocco's Cafe bar and Hot FM, sponsored by XXXX. Friday 5th March. DJ "Tegan". Free ticket in Whitsunday Times local paper.

Bachelors and Spinsters Ball

Saturday March 6th at Club crocodile, Long Island. Whitsunday Transit bus from near Mangrove Jacks at 5:45 p.m. Whitsunday All Over water taxi departs Shute harbour at 6:15 p.m., Daydream island at 6:30 p.m. arrives Long Island 7 p.m. Last Water Taxi return is 12:30 a.m. Tickets $20 include bus and water taxi. Sponsored by Castlemaine Perkins, and there is (surprise) a heavy emphasis on the drinks available ($3 XXXX and XXXX Gold, $6 UDLs, Happy Hour 8-9, and 10:30-11).

St Patrick's day

Lots of pubs promised events, but the big winner was Paddy's Shennanigans, which was swinging by 6 p.m. and impossible to enter by 8 p.m. The Harp, Guinness and other Irish drinks were all on tap. Best sight, the characters with heads painted with Irish flag. Silliest sights, the doormen wearing green plastic hats.

Coral Sea Resort Sunday April 11

Poolside party with live entertainment at their last session before their redevelopment interrupts access to the foreshore. They appear to be planning to move guests to apartments at Whitsunday Vista after April and reopen in August.

Hog's Breath Jimmy Buffett Parrot Head party

Sunday 25th April, an annual event.

Hog's Breath Tropical Peaks Race

Sail to islands and run up hills. Sounds active on the weekend of 30 April.

Tour De Backpackers festival

Week of events in Airlie Beach from May 1 to 8. Tropical welcome party at mainland nightspots, three day Seafest with snorkelling and yachting, and bands and DJs. Starts in Brisbane April 1, various stops, ending in Cairns on June 1.

Whitsunday Sailing Club Ball

Saturday 8 May. All inclusive price includes three course meal, glass of wine, and a prize draw. Yachtman of the Year will be announced. Smart casual, semi-formal or elegant (which does seem to provide a choice of dress styles).

Morocco's Airlie Beach Wild West Bundy Bonanza

Morocco's Cafe bar and Hot FM, sponsored by Bundy Rum. Friday 21st May. DJ Meech and "Tegan". Door prizes, $10 roast spit.

Bundy Island Rum Ball

Club Crocodile Long island Saturday 22 May, $20 including water taxi and transit.

FantaSea Fireworks Night

Friday 8th July, the foreshores light up!

Stardust Circus

Friday 23 July to Sunday 25 July, at the Airlie Beach foreshore. Clowns and animals, trapeze.

Airlie Beach Triathalon

82 entrants, swim 750 metres, cycle 20 kilometres, and run 5 kilometres. Jamie Hunt of New Zealand won in 57 minutes, 22 seconds, on the other hand, he is ranked third in the world. Nici Andronicus of Manly was first woman over the line in 65 minutes 33 seconds.

Makin' Waves

Sat 16 October, midday to midnight, at the Whitsunday Sportspark. Tickets $48 presold on (07) 4948 0911 or Tickettek 131 931, $60 at the door. Sounds like a warmup for the New Year bash at the same venue.

Stadium Motorcross

Saturday night, 13 November at Airlie Beach Sportspark. Burnouts, food stall, licensed bar, fireworks at 9:30 and later.

Lions Club Christmas Pageant

Saturday, 13 November, parade from Watersun Road through Airlie Beach to the Whitsunday Sailing Club at 3:30 p.m. Father Christmas, skydiving, biplane, tug of War, thong throwing, displays, horizontal bungee, fireworks at 8:30 p.m. Outrigger Whitsunday has their new Dragon Boat in the parade, and launched it for an unsteady paddle straight after.
